Classes

Each school's classes per grade for the year shown in the header: created in one go, named by letters or numbers.

Open the page in SchoolOS

What it is for

A class — or section — is a pupil's place in the year: “1 A”, “2 B”. Here each grade's classes are created to the number needed, their names and capacities changed, and each one's pupil count seen. Pupils are placed in them and promoted through them.

Who uses it

The page opens for whoever holds “View classes”, to look only, or “Manage schools, stages, grades and sections”, to work in it. In the built-in roles: Owner, Principal. A group grants these to any role under Settings → Roles and permissions, and everyone sees only what is within their own scope.

Step by step

  1. Check the year in the header; the page shows that year's classes.
  2. Press “+ Create sections”, choose the school, the stage and the naming, and type the total needed for each grade.
  3. To change a class's name or capacity, or delete it: the pencil on the grade's row.
  4. To add many classes: “Import” from an Excel file.

How it works

Only the difference between the current number and the total asked for is created, with the next letters (up to 12) or numbers (up to 99), skipping names in use, even by a deleted class; nothing is deleted if you type a smaller number. A class's name is not repeated in the same grade at the same school in the same year. Capacity, 1 to 200, is for reference only: going over it does not stop a pupil being placed, and it is copied with the classes to the next year. A class can be deleted even with pupils in it: they go back to the unplaced list and it is recorded in each one's history; restoring brings the class back and can return those it unplaced, if they have not been placed elsewhere. “Stage” offers only the school's stages ticked under “Stages per school”, or every stage if none is ticked. All of it is per school: you manage only the classes of the schools your permission covers.

Questions

I don't see my classes.
Look at the year in the header: the page shows that year's classes.
Does capacity stop an extra pupil being placed?
No. Capacity is for reference only.
Why won't the total take more than 12?
Letters stop at the twelfth. Choose numbers for more, up to 20.
