Student placement

Placing pupils in the year's classes: the classes' pupils on one side, the “Unplaced” on the other, and the ones you pick placed at once.

What it is for

When the year starts or new pupils arrive, every pupil needs a class. This page puts both sides together: the classes' pupils under the filters, and beside them the “Unplaced” list, so you tick the ones you want and place them in a class with one press. From it a pupil is also taken out of their class, back to the list.

Who uses it

The page opens for whoever holds “View student placement”, to look only, or “Manage people, staff and students”, to work in it. In the built-in roles: Owner, Principal. A group grants these to any role under Settings → Roles and permissions, and everyone sees only what is within their own scope.

Step by step

  1. Choose the school, stage, grade and class in the filters; the table shows the pupils of the classes under them.
  2. In the “Unplaced” card: tick the pupils you want, choose the class at its foot, then “Place”.
  3. To take a pupil out of their class: the remove icon on their row, then “Remove from class”; they go back to “Unplaced”.
  4. To add a new pupil from here: “+ Add a student”, the same window as on “Students”.
  5. “Export Excel” downloads the table's pupils, with their identity numbers for those allowed to see them.

How it works

“Unplaced” has two parts: pupils enrolled this year in a school and grade without a class, each with their school and grade under their name; and active pupils with no enrolment this year, such as a pupil added with “No class” or one promoted “To the group”. Each reader sees only their own schools' pupils; a pupil never enrolled at any school belongs to the group, and only someone whose permission covers the whole group sees them. Placing sets the school, stage and grade from the class chosen, and is written to each pupil's history. “Remove from class” keeps the pupil in their grade and school without a class, and deletes nothing. Someone who may only look sees the classes and the list with no tick boxes or buttons. The table shows 300 pupils at most and the card 200 of each part, and the page says the full count when there are more. A withdrawn pupil does not appear here: they are brought back from their file. Promoting a whole school into next year is “Year-end promotion”.

On the page

  • Choose the school, stage, grade and class, or search for a pupil.
  • Back to “Students”, and export the table's pupils.
  • The pupils of the classes under the filters. The pencil opens a pupil's file, and the remove icon sends them back to “Unplaced”.
  • Tick the pupils, choose the class at the card's foot, then “Place”.
  • “+ Add a student”, the same window as on “Students”.

Questions

Why is a pupil missing from “Unplaced”?
The list follows the filters and your schools: a pupil of a school your permission does not reach is not shown, and one never enrolled at any school only shows to someone whose permission covers the whole group. A withdrawn pupil is not on it: allocate them from their file.
I see no tick boxes and no “Place” button.
Your permission on this page is to look, or it does not cover these pupils' school.
Does “Remove from class” delete anything?
No. The pupil stays in their school and grade without a class, goes back to “Unplaced”, and the move stays in their history.
